Mika Day 8

October 23, 2008

Today, is the final day of constructing Mika.  We are almost done.  It has been great doing this sew-a-long with all of you.  I hope that it helped and didn’t hinder.  I can’t wait to see everyone’s creations.

We are putting the waistband on today, so grab your pants and your waistband piece.  I followed Nancy’s instructions for this, too.  You may want to hop over to her site, too.  It will only help to see it done twice.

Thank you all so much for following along!  Now, let’s get started.

Take your waistband piece.  You will need to cut it into three parts.  The first will be the size of the back side of the pants.  Then, you will cut the leftover piece into two…making one about 1 inch wider than the other.

Fold them in half and iron them flat.  They will look like the picture below.

Now, take a piece of elastic.  Mine was 3/4″ in size.  Nancy used two smaller pieces, but for the boys’ version…I wanted to use just one piece.

Measure it against your child’s back.  I held it up to both of his sides, then, cut it about 1 inch shorter.

Now, stitch a casing.  I stitched 1/8″ from the top edge of the waistband.  Then, I stitched far enough down for the elastic to fit.  You will just have to hold your elastic up to see where you need to stitch.

I, then, ran it through the casing and stitched it in place at both ends.  The results are shown below.

Now iron the ends of your other two pieces in on each side about 1/4″.  Then, stick your elasticized waistband in.

It is very important to pin it in place.  It will slide out easily.  Plus, you need to keep it straight.  The elastic makes it want to curve.

Then, stitch it in place. End your stitching before you get to the bottom.  Leave about 3/8″  or a little more for attaching the waistband.  This will be more clear later.

Now, attach the other side of the waistband the same way.

The image below is what you should have after these steps are completed.

You will now need to kind of pull apart the bottom of your waistband.  You are only going to attach the right side of it to the right side of your pants.  You will need to pin it as you go.  Remember, the side that the zipper flap is on need to have the 1 inch hang past the end of the pants.

Using a 3/8″ seam allowance, stitch this waistband in place.

This is what you should have after you are done.

Now, you will turn under the part of the waistband that wasn’t sewn.  Pin this to the wrong side of the pants.  You’ll fold just enough to cover your stitching from the last step.

Carefully, stitch this in place from the front.  Be careful, you don’t want to break your needle by trying to stitch through a pin.

I stitched about 1/8″ from the seam of the last stitching.

You will begin at the top portion of the waistband, near the elastic part.  Keeping your needle down, you will turn at the corners.  This will catch the side.  Then, turn again and start sewing the main waistband part.  You will reverse this when you get to the other side.  You will end your stitching near the elastic on the top of the waistband.

I really hope that made sense!

Now, we are ready for the last step.  I’m going to close my pants with hook and eyes.  You could use a snap or a button.  It is just totally up to you here.

I just find where they need to go and sew them in place through one layer of the waistband.

Now, try closing your pants.  If you can, then, you are done!!!! Yay!!!!

Last step, try them on your little one.

If you have any questions, leave them in the comments and I’ll try to answer them. Our next post will be a summary. I’ll include more finished shots and have a list of all the days for quick reference.

Notice my model is wearing his Zoe tee. I told you we would have a complete outfit in the end!

I can’t wait to see all of your creations. Look for the next post to see how you can share.
