Rachel Sew-a-Long Day 3

February 11, 2009

It’s day 3.  We’re actually going to do a little sewing today.  Grab all of your number 6 pieces.  We are going to finish them and stitch them together.  I’m going to use my serger, but you can use a different technique to finish your seams…such as, zig zags.

The first step is to serge the bottom sides of the pieces.  I did this by serging on side to the point, removing from serger, and serging the other side to the point.  Go ahead and trim the serger threads down.  These will be held in place by later topstitching.

Now, you need to stitch all of the pieces together to form a ring.

Iron all the seams in one direction and topstitch each joining seam.

Now, we are going to turn under our points, iron them, and hem them in place.

I first folded one side down, ironed it, then, folded the other side over, and ironed it.  You will do this all the way around the layer.

Once you have ironed the hem, you can stitch it in place.

That is the end of day three.  Your pointed layer is now ready to go.  Our next Rachel sew-a-long day will be stitching the skirt pieces together.  Happy sewing!  If you have any questions about this part of the sew-a-long, leave them in the comments section, and I’ll do my best to answer them.
